Behind the Scenes for FIMAGE
This week I've been asked to take over the Instagram feed of FIMAGE (@fimage_ry) telling stories behind my images, showing how I work at Felt Fotografi.

Viime vuonna tuli perustelluksi hankkia pakettiauto, ja jälkikäteen ihmettelen, miten ilman sitä on viitsinyt roudata! Tosin jostain syystä samaan aikaan mukana kulkeva kalusto on pienentynyt koko ajan. :D
Last year I decided to get a van for the company. Afterwards I wonder how one ever got around without it! Although, at the same time the gear we take with us seems to become smaller and lighter all the time. :D
Mukana keikalla käytännössä aina on perässä vedettävä kameralaukku, jonka täytän Nikonin ja Sigman tarvikkeilla. Valaisun olen viime aikoina päätynyt tekemään useimmiten Lastoliten Skyliten läpi, mutta mitään sääntöä en siinä pidä, vaan tilanteen mukaan pohdin aina fiksuimman ratkaisun. Hyvin harvoin kuitenkaan kuvaan ihan pelkällä luonnonvalolla.
The gear that I (almost) always have with me is in a roller bag. I fill the bag with some Nikon & Sigma gear. The lighting lately has been modified with Lastolite Skylite, but there's no rule to that. I always see what's required and play by the situation. Very rarely I use only natural light.
Tässä on mukana pari kuvaa keikalta, jolla piti kuvata yli sata henkilöä ”liukuhihnalta”. Asiakkaan kokous oli Finlandiatalolla, joten rakensimme ”studion” sinne.
Here's a couple of photos from a gig where we were asked to take corporate portraits of more than a hundred employees. The customer had their meeting at the Finlandia Hall so we built our studio there.

Viime viikolla studiollani kävi asiakas, joka pyysi, että kuvaisimme luonnonvalolla. Ensimmäisen kerran samainen asiakas kävi studiollani, kun vuokraisäntäni oli Lasse Wuori, vielä ennen kuin Kaffe Obscura muutti Pitäjänmäelle. :) Olin laittanut yhdenlaisen valosetupin valmiiksi ennen kuin asiakas tuli studiolle. Kun hän saapui paikalle, hän käveli studiolla olleen korkean ikkunan viereen. Pyysin häntä kääntymään kameraan päin, emmekä koskaan laittaneet salamalaitteita edes päälle. Tällä kertaa en edes laittanut valoja valmiiksi. Sen sijaan heijastelin, suodatin ja rajasin ikkunoista paistavaa aurinkoa. Ja keitin tottakai kahvit Lassen paahtamasta kahvista.
Last week I had a customer coming to my studio that requested simple portraits shot with nartural light. The first time this customer came to my studio I was still working as a tenant for Mr. Lasse Wuori's studio, at the time before Kaffe Obscura moved to Pitäjänmäki. I had prepared a set up of lights before the customer arrived. When she arrived, she walked to a tall window at the corner of the studio. I asked her to turn and took the photos. We never turned the strobes on. This time I didn't even bother setting up the lights. Instead I reflected, diffused and blocked the sunlight coming in from the studio windows. And made a pot of coffee from the beans roasted by Lasse.

Vaikka tuon markkinoinnissani eniten esiin henkilökuvausta, tuotekuvaus on kuitenkin iso osa työtäni. Suurimman osan tuotekuvauksista teemme asiakkaan luona (taas käyttöä pakettiautolle!).
Valaisuni on yleensä isojen pintojen kautta tehtyä, joko heijastellen tai isojen kankaiden läpi. Toki tekniikka palvelee asiakkaan tarpeita, eli ensin aina selvitetään mitä asiakas odottaa ja vasta sen jälkeen mietitään miten se toteutetaan. :) Tässä Martelan kanssa tehdyssä kuvauksessa varasimme asiakkaan showroomista sopivan tilan ja päädyin valaisemaan katon kautta heijastellen, sekä isolla pinnalla edestä.
Although most of my marketing is about people photography, my work includes a good deal of product photography. Most of the photoshoots we do at customer's premises. Another reason to get the van!
My lighting is usually reflecting from surrounding surfaces or through big diffusers. But the technique is there for the customer's needs, so we always start with figuring out the desired outcome and only after that decide how we light the scene. :) This photoshoot we did with Martela was made at their showroom. I ended up reflecting the light from the ceiling and using a large diffused light from the front.

Tässä on yksi ammatillisen itsetunnon kohottaja kohta kolmen vuoden takaa, kun hiukset olivat vielä 80-luvulla ja Kaffe Obscuran paahdin studiotilan etuosassa. Pääsin kuvaamaan HIMin promokuvat, kun Jukka "Kosmo" Kröger aloitti bändin rummuissa. Bändin manageri pyysi selkeitä ja yksinkertaisia promokuvia ja viittasi aiemmin tekemääni kuvaukseen Wallu Valpion kanssa. Kollegani Mika Levälampi lähti auttamaan minua ja kävimme edellisenä päivänä rakentamassa kuvauksen setupin valmiiksi. Otimme ensin ryhmäkuvan ja sen jälkeen yksittäiskuvat bändin jäsenistä. Aikataulu oli haastava, mutta koska testasimme setin edellisenä päivänä, saimme koko kuvauksen toteutettua alle tunnissa.

Here's one of the "self confidence boosts" as a photographer almost three years ago, when my hair was still at the 80's and Kaffe Obscura ran it's roastery at the studio. I got to make the promotion photos for HIM as Jukka "Kosmo" Kröger joined the band. The manager asked for plain and simple promo images and made a reference to my earlier photoshoot with Mr. Wallu Valpio. My colleague Mika Levälampi joined me and we spent the previous day setting up the studio. On the shooting day we started with the group photo and continued with the single portraits. The schedule was challenging, but we got through the whole photoshoot in less than an hour - thanks to the good preparations.

”I don’t always travel, but when I do, I have my camera with me.” Pyrin matkustamaan aina kun siihen on aikaa, ja yhdistän mahdollisuuksien mukaan asiakastöitä näihin matkoihin. Inspiroidun paikoista jotka eivät näytä samalta kuin oma arki. Matkakamerana minulla on joko kevyemmin Fujifilmin X100S tai jos haluan ”enemmän pelivaraa”, Nikonin Df, johon otan yleensä mukaan 85mm (Nikon) ja 20mm (Sigma) linssit. Larijarnefelt.com -sivulle olen laittanut muutamia reissufiilistelyjä. Kuvaaminen on lempiharrastukseni.
I try to travel whenever I find the time for it. Whenever possible, I combine it with my paid assignments. I find places that look different from "my everyday" inspiring. My travel gear is either Fujifilm X100S (when I travel light) or Nikon Df with 85mm (Nikon) and 20mm (Sigma) lenses. On larijarnefelt.com I've put some of my travel photos. Photography is my favourite hobby.

TAISTELUTARINAT on työn puolesta ehkä isoin ja hienoin juttu, mitä olen ikinä saanut tehdä. Koko projekti lähti käyntiin siitä, kun menin asiasta tietämättömänä Kamppiin Sylva Ry:n järjestämään tuolitapahtumaan. Koin hyvin voimakkaasti, että minun on pakko tehdä jotain, auttaa perheitä, jotka taistelevat oman lapsensa syöpää vastaan. Siitä lähti käyntiin projekti, joka ammatillisesti huipentui kuvasarjan valintaan Fotofinlandia 2016 finalistiksi ja Yleisön suosikiksi. Kuviin liittyy perheen itsensä kertoma tarina, joka on kuvan yhteydessä. Kaikki kuvat ja tarinat ovat nähtävillä osoitteessa www.taistelutarinat.fi. Tärkeintä itselleni oli kaikki se, mitä perheet kokivat ja mitä syövän tai muiden vaikeuksien kanssa kamppailevat ihmiset kertoivat saaneensa tästä projektista. TAISTELUTARINAT -kuvasarja on tällä hetkellä kiertävä valokuvanäyttely, johon kuuluu 9 tai 18 taulua tarinoineen. TAISTELUTARINAT - BATTLE STORIES is probably the biggest and finest work related thing I've ever done. The project began when I walked to Sylva Ry's event in Kamppi and felt an urgent need to help the families that fight the child's cancer. Occupationally the project reached its climax when the series was nominated as the finalist and chosen as the public's favourite in Fotofinlandia 2016. The photos are presented with the story of the family as it's been told by the family. All photos and stories can be seen at www.taistelutarinat.fi and the stories can be seen by clicking the photos. There is also a link to the translated version in English and Swedish. For me the most important thing was how the families themselves experienced the photoshoot, the series and the exhibition. As well as what other people in challenging situations in their lives felt when they saw and read the photos and stories. The TAISTELUTARINAT -photo series is at the moment a touring photo exhibition with either 9 or 18 photos.
