Photoshoot in Las Vegas
This summer we took ”The Roadtrip”. The famous Route 66. Or so it was planned.
Me and my friend flew to Chicago, rented a Ford Mustang Cabriolet (or similar, as they always say in the rental contract to keep the uncertainty present - this time it really was a Mustang Cabriolet) and headed west.
The journey started with a slight delay, since my luggage went missing on the transfer in Iceland. We got the luggage the next day and started driving on the Route 66.
In Tulsa we decided to take a detour and headed to Dallas. We drove from Dallas to El Paso, visited the White Sands and continued to Phoenix. From Phoenix we drove to Flagstaff, visited the Grand Canyon and continued to Las Vegas. In Las Vegas I had contacted a couple of friends of mine and we arranged a photoshoot.
Earlier on the photoshoot day we drove around outside of Las Vegas searching for a nice looking location for the photos. We had scheduled the shoot around sunset because of the light. After scouting the place we geared up at a local photography store and picked up Jonna, our model for the photoshoot.
Here’s some behind the scenes photos taken by my friend who also assisted on the photoshoot. He prefers to remain non-credited. The mystery man. :) Nevertheless, he did a great job on the set. Thank you.

Kaikki on oolrait - levynkansi ja promokuvat Mika Ikoselle
Puolitoista vuotta sitten olin tekemässä näyttötyötä liittyen valokuvaajan ammattitutkintoon. Siihen liittyen päätin ottaa kaksi erilaista kellomainoskuvaa. Mitään edullisia kelloja en tietenkään halunnut kuvata, joten etsin verkosta sopivia referenssikuvia sekä Tag Heuerilta, että Omegalta.
Mallin tuli myös olla sopivasti karismaattinen ja kameran edessä viihtyvä, joten aloin käydä läpi facebook-kavereitani. Ystäväni Henden kavereista löytyi sitten sopiva ehdokas, ja kysyttyäni ensin Hendeltä, laiton Micalle viestiä. Mica suostui samantien kuvattavaksi, jonka jälkeen otin yhteyttä aiemmin samana vuonna keikalla tapaamaani meikkaajaan, Miia Ollulaan. Kun sanoin, että meikattavana on XL5:n Mica, Miia oli satasella mukana. Kuulemma tuotanto oli tuttua nuoruusvuosilta. Otimme kellokuvausten jälkeen kuvia myös Miialle. Miian omilla sivuilla oleva profiilikuva on esimerkiksi tuosta kuvaussessiosta.
Koska studiomme liikevaihto ei vielä ole siinä pisteessä, että voisimme tuosta vaan ostaa pari arvokasta kelloa "portfoliokuviin", otin yhteyttä Kelloliike Osk. Lindroosiin. Liikkeessä ymmärrettiin heti, mistä oli kyse, ja erittäin ystävällisen palvelun lisäksi minulle pakattiin paperikassiin kaksi kelloa. Yhteenlaskettu arvo n. 13500€. En muistaakseni ole yhtä arvokasta paperikassia pitänyt käsissäni tähän mennessä.

Noin kuukausi sitten puhelimeni soi, ja Mika (huom! koolla, ei enää ceellä) kysyi, olisiko minulla mahdollisuus ottaa hänestä kuvia. Mika on julkaisemassa uutta sinkkua ja laittoi biisin minulle kuunneltavaksi. Samantien kun kuulin biisin, oli minulla melko selkeä visio siitä, minkälaisia kuvia olemme ottamassa.
Muutaman puhelun ja lyhyen pinterest-taulun kokoamisen jälkeen meillä oli yhteinen näkemys siitä, mitä olemme tekemässä. Kysyin mukaan myös luottomeikkaajani Millan, joka pääsi lyhyellä varoitusajalla studiolle tekemään meikin ja hiukset.
Milla Stenman hoiti ammattitaidolla Mikan meikin ja hiukset promokuvauksiin Felt Fotografin studiolla. Kuten kuvista näkyy, tiimi toimi ja kuvauksissa oli hauskaa ihan oikeastikin.
Tärkeintä missä tahansa kuvauksessa on kuvaajan ja kuvattavan välille muodostuva yhteys. Mikan kanssa olimme nyt studiossa toista kertaa, ja sen huomasi. Mika oli kuin kotonaan. Samoin Milla, joka käy säännöllisesti tekemässä meikkauksia studiollamme. Kuuntelimme uutta Kaikki on oolrait -biisiä, kerroimme kuulumisia, vitsailimme, ja kuin huomaamatta Mika "ajautui" kameran eteen. Siinä vaiheessa oli helppo ohjailla hieman kameran takaa katseen suuntaa, vartalon asentoa, ym...
Lopputulos on mielestäni mahtava. Juuri sellainen fiilis, valo ja meininki, mitä lähdimme hakemaan.
Mika Ikosen sinkku "Kaikki on oolrait" julkaistaan 17.4.2015. Siinä on tulevan kesän virallinen hyvän mielen biisi.

The Difference that a Cup of Coffee Makes.
For me it’s always been the person I’m photographing. Not the photograph itself. I know there’s a bunch of technical stuff I need to master in order to make a great photo. But the content in the picture, that’s what really makes it.
”Smile is just an expression”.
It’s something I overheard as a joke when I was spending time with my colleagues. As cynical as it may sound, it’s true. In most cases a smile makes a person more beautiful. But the beauty of a smile is in the content it has. If you get a smile - a real one that is - from a person, it gives you a signal that you’re on the right track. If you get a smile from a person you find attractive, it explodes the little fireworks in your stomach. If you get a smile from a person you’re trying to impress, it’s a sign of acceptance. Whenever I get a smile from my daughter, I feel ”there’s a reason why” (a quote from Europe: New Love in Town).
Oh, and we all know a fake smile when we see one. There’s nothing beautiful in that.
I don’t necessarily want to capture the ”obviously beautiful” moment. There’s so much in the delicate little expressions that anyone does, when they’re simply being themselves. There’s so much beauty in everything anyone does or is.
The challenge being a photographer is to see those ”real” moments. A lot of times there’s no way of telling if the expressions are real or if they’re something that comes out just because of the camera.
Time is the enemy.
If I’m given 30 minutes to take a photo of someone, there’s a good chance it’ll be a ”technical portrait”. Nice lighting, a look into the camera. Who knows, may be we even manage to get an expression that ”looks like the person”. But there’s no way of telling. That’s why I prefer spending at least an hour making a simple portrait of a person. It includes a cup of coffee (we make a killer coffee at our studio btw, it’s freshly roasted and I know how to brew it!) and a lot of chatting. The objective is to get to know each other even just a bit. In order to know what’s real.
Me & my cameras at 22-Pistepirkko’s studio
Last week I got a chance to hang around with my cameras at 22-Pistepirkko’s studio while they’re working on their new album. The original idea was to take a portrait of Asko, but on top of that I ended up taking a lot of documentary photos during the day. What I love about musicians is that once they get to be with their instrument they relax. And that’s when you get the good shots. Oh, and we did start this photoshoot with a pot of coffee I made. I took a small bag of fresh coffee with me.
We got some nice look-into-the-camera-portraits, but for me in this case, the beauty was in the moments when ”the spotlights were turned off”.
